Hot off the heels of his 10-year anniversary of taking over Fiasco Gelato, CEO James Boettcher will serve as a case study at Social Venture Institute (SVI) Alberta 2019.
“Often I underestimate the power of sharing our journey over the last 10 years in building a purpose-driven company that has been through so many ups and downs,” Boettcher says.
SVI Alberta, presented in partnership with Thrive, Hollyhock, and Trico Charitable Foundation, is a three-day event June 5-7th at the Banff Centre bringing together social innovators from across the province to tackle business challenges and connect with like-minded thinkers.
Under Boettcher’s leadership, Fiasco Gelato has established its brand as a “not-only-for-profit” company, prioritizing sustainable business practices. Both internally with its employees’ wellbeing, and externally through its consistent presence in the Calgary community, supporting families and children in need.
Fiasco Gelato has also earned its B Corp certification – which involves a rigorous screening process to examine a business’ social and environmental impact and its governance. An average business would score about 50 points, and a business must score 80 points to become B Corp-certified. In its 2018 assessment, Fiasco Gelato scored 111.
Fiasco Gelato has remained resilient over the past decade, even through two separate fires at two separate production facilities, and the economic recession. “This journey, combined with a bigger story of my own journey, will hopefully ignite some great reflection and ability to persevere for those trying to change the world,” says Boettcher.
