Open to everyone – #buildingcommunity

Right off 33rd Street and 17th Avene SE resides Calgary’s largest makerspace.

They came together with one common vision: to create opportunity, self sustainability and, perhaps most importantly, community.

By fusing talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, and offering a large variety of maker tools ranging from 3D printers to leather sewing machines, FUSE33 aim’s to create a collaborative workspace that will foster growth and human connectivity.

Besides a vast array of educational classes, they will offer tiers of monthly memberships that grant folks access to a woodshop, tool library, computer lab loaded with software, metal shop, 3D printers, sewing shop and, yes, LASERS (okay, not the ‘pew-pew’ sci-fi lasers, but hey, laser cutters are pretty cool too).

Their space is open to everyone—from people who have never stepped foot into a wood-working shop, to artists who want to rent dedicated space to work on their projects, to engineers who have decades of experience. Even if you just want to stop in for a coffee and get some work done, they’ll have that too. This community access is made possible in part by the Community Hubs Initiative, a partnership between the City of Calgary, Rotary, and United Way. These partners are supporting Fuse33 to ensure that the goodness of the makerspace will be available to any interested residents and community organizations by reducing cost barriers to use the space and ensuring the lobby area, weekly drop-in classes, and laptop computers and coffee are available for the public. This will be huge for residents of Greater Forest Lawn and all of Calgary!

As part of another interesting partnership, all FUSE33 members will also have access to emergeHUB, a co-working space initiative of International Ave BRZ, located just down the block. Imagine the possibilities for residents, with an interest or hobby around a craft; they can refine their skills and production value at FUSE33 then head over to emergeHUB and get help with the business side of things. And did you know, that at emergeHUB, you can get onsite help from business specialists with Thrive, Momentum and ACCA.
